The White Card is a new type of residence permit specifically suited to the lifestyle of digital nomads.
Accordingly, it can be obtained by non-EU citizens who have a legal relationship for employment in another country, or have an ownership stake in a foreign company with proven profits, and who carry out their work and manage their business from Hungary using an advanced digital technology solution.

Remote work therefore appears as an independent purpose of residence to which a separate type of permit is linked, so if someone has already verified another purpose of residence (e.g.: continuing studies, or working domestically, or ownership share in a business) they can no longer apply for the White Card.
The length of stay in Hungary in possession of the White Card is not included in the length of stay required for the issuance of the residence permit.
How does the White Card differ from the usual residence permits?
The White Card is valid for a maximum of one year, which can be extended once for a maximum of one year.
Another important difference is that, in contrast to residence permits for other purposes, the White Card does not have the right of family reunification, i.e. the family members of the White Card holder cannot obtain residence rights with regard to the card holder.
The solution is in line with EU law, as member states can require a two-year legal stay before ensuring family reunification, and the White Card cannot result in a longer stay in the first place.
